MidAmerican Energy is proposing to raise gas delivery rates for Iowa customers. The proposed rate hike will lead to a $54.9 million annual increase in profits for MidAmerican. 

The rate hike comes as MidAmerican's parent company, Berkshire Hathaway Energy (BHE), is collecting record-breaking profits. In the second quarter of 2026, BHE’s profits reached $891 million, an increase of 27% over the second quarter in 2025, according to CNBC.

A monopoly, investor-owned utility, like MidAmerican Energy, creates value for shareholders by earning a guaranteed rate of return on their capital spending, including its gas delivery network. Doubling down on gas spending will increase utility earnings, while locking customers into paying for fossil assets, and every penny of fuel costs, over many decades.

But MidAmerican's customers can make their voices heard. Tell the Iowa Utilities Commission (IUC), the independent regulator that is responsible for protecting ratepayer interests, that you don't want to foot the bill for MidAmerican's gas and greed.

Instructions for filing a comment: 
 

1. Create an account or log in to the IUC’s electronic filing system (EFS) at efs.iowa.gov. After creating your account, follow the instructions delivered to your email address to create a profile.
    

2. Within the EFS portal, select “Submit a Comment or Objection in a Docket.”
    

3. Reference the docket number, RPU-2026-0001, in your comment. Introduce yourself and state your position clearly. Support your position with information about the rate increase and its impact on you.
